<p>A fabricante de chips Qualcomm tem projeto para fazer da 5G não apenas uma tecnologia celular, mas também um padrão utilizado por emissoras de TV aberta em todo o mundo para transmitir programação. A empresa desenvolveu o que chama de 5G Standalone Broadcast, e cuja padronização está sendo feita pela entidade global 3GPP.</p>



<p>Segundo Francisco Soares, vice-presidente de relações governamentais da Qualcomm para a América Latina, a tecnologia pode ser utilizada tanto por radiodifusores, quanto por operadoras de telefonia móvel, para irradiar sinais de TV.</p>



<p>No caso dos radiodifusores, seria utilizado o espectro que eles já detém, de 600 MHz, e também a infraestrutura de torres. No caso das operadoras, as transmissões se dão no espectro da rede móvel, como 3,5 GHz.</p>
